Be Heavenswary

With Final Fantasy XIV’s first expansion launching soon, it’s always smart to keep a few things in mind if you’re planning to jump straight to Ishgard as soon as the servers open.

First and foremost, please remember that there will be server issues. It’s not that I don’t have faith in SE, but this is simply common knowledge for those of use that have lived an MMO’s launch (or expansion). A flawless launch is rare. Disconnects, full servers, restarts… Expect all of this. If it doesn’t happen – well, fantastic! But if it does, don’t lose your marbles – you are warned.

Speaking of which, be mindful if you’re asking for vacations for the early access or launch. I have seen my fair share of angry forum posts from people who had their “launch vacations” ruined because of server stability issues early on.

For those of you waking up early or staying up late for early access or launch, remember to get some sleep before the actual opening time. It’s likely that you’ll be in the game for quite a bit (or raging on Twitter or forums, should the aforementioned issues arise) and if you’re tired or sleepy you probably won’t enjoy the new content as much as you hope – you’ll probably skip details or important facts.

And speaking of “skipping”, unless you’re rushing to the new level cap, take your time. Sure, if all you want is to get to 60 as soon as possible then it’s fine – I won’t tell you to avoid doing that because of X or Y reasons – but otherwise savor in the moment. The new content will be with us for a long time, but there’s only one time when it’s all fresh. Look around you, see the animations, listen to the new music – enjoy.

Remember you’re not the only one that’ll be enjoying the new content! Others will too… And some may – willingly or unwillingly – share their excitement at what they find or see! Be mindful of spoilers! It doesn’t hurt reminding your social media friends to keep it spoiler-free.

Finally, avoid the Mogstation during the first hours of launch or early access. It’ll probably be rushed by people getting their codes in. In the same vein, if you are planning on switching races to Au Ra try to buy your Fantasias early on!

A prepared adventurer will make it further into Ishgard! And a smart gamer will also be ready for the dangers that will show up – both in and out of the game.
